Then in high school, Nic took a class called “Full on Fitness” because he didn’t consider himself to be academic. It set in motion a series of events that led Nic to a career as a personal trainer and his new role at DoDay.
“At the end of year 12, I tore the meniscus in my knee. I’d love to say doing something sporty, but I did it was just buggering about,” laughs Nic.
“I couldn’t do any of the sporty things I had been doing. I had a mate whose dad owned a gym, GTT in Hobart, so I reached out to ask if I could go in there to work out. I trained there for a few months and really liked it. That’s when I first met Michael.”
At that stage, Nic didn’t know what career path he wanted to follow. His parents wanted him to do medicine. But he wasn’t keen, so he compromised and enrolled to become a physiotherapist. For this, he needed to move to the Gold Coast.
“I couldn’t get excited about medicine, but being a sportsman, I was injured a lot, and I was interested in learning more about injury. I went for one year doing a Diploma of Health Science. I had a uni lifestyle eating junk and drinking too much and I put on 15 kilos of fat,” says Nic.
“Before that I was little, just 68 kilos, and what I found was that the weight helped me to lift extra in the gym. I got a taste for it and loved the feeling of being able to lift heavily. I started working out properly and dropped the fat and built muscle instead.”
“The added bonus was that when I went back to boxing I found I was so much stronger as a boxer. No one in those sports had ever told me that strength training would improve my performance. But now I always do both.”
Nic decided not to continue with Health Science, moving home to Tasmania to focus more on a career related to the physicality of sports and exercise.
When Nic came home, his family were training with a local Personal Trainer – Michael. Michael mentioned to Nic’s family that he’d make a great PT and that started Nic’s path to a career in Personal Training.
After completing a Cert III and Cert IV in Personal Training at Fit College, Nic mentored under other coaches at GTT before taking team training classes, which he has now been leading for over a year.
“I love training here. This is where I really learned how to be a PT. Since starting on this path, I’ve never looked back. I love it,” says Nic.
To round out his qualifications, Nic also obtained an accreditation in Sports Nutrition.
“It gives me international recognition as a sports nutritionist. I love nutrition. It’s eye-opening how much nutrition affects your training and your body composition.
“If a person is 76 kilos and wants to get to a particular weight or goal, I can tell them how to handle that. I know exactly what to do in real life to get there.”
Nic’s real passion is one-on-one coaching.
“I want my clients to get the benefits and results, but I also want to make the session enjoyable, and I like diversity in my clientele so I can adapt to and enjoy lots of different people and personalities. That is why DoDay is such a good fit for me.
“Mikey (Michael) has a similar personality to me – light-hearted and easy-going. I’ve known him for a long time and we get on really well. I’m excited to have this opportunity to learn from him and train DoDay clients.”
Nic is currently training to get in the ring for the first time as a boxer – and training lots of DoDay clients to help them achieve their goals.
Nic is currently taking on new clients.
