After a diabetes diagnosis, Zonia knew something had to change. Strength training became her way forward – not just for her health, but for her confidence, mindset and everyday life.
Three years ago, walking into a gym was the last thing Zonia wanted to do.
She didn’t feel strong. She didn’t feel confident. And after being diagnosed with diabetes, she didn’t feel healthy either.
Mostly, she felt awful about herself.
But Zonia also had a vision for her future: she wanted to be an old lady with muscles. Someone who could move, travel, keep up with friends and live life on her own terms.
So she decided it was time to start strength training.
Finding the right trainer mattered. Zonia wasn’t looking for intimidation or military-style workouts. She wanted someone approachable. Someone fun. Someone she could talk to on the hard days.
That’s how she found Michael at DoDay.
From the start, the difference wasn’t just physical – it was emotional. Even on the days Zonia arrived at the gym feeling tired, flat or stressed, she always walked out feeling stronger and clearer.
There were breaks along the way – family life happens – but Zonia always returned. Because Michael “has her back”, checking in, answering questions, keeping her focused and making it easy to start again instead of giving up.
At first, she admits that the gym felt intimidating. She was embarrassed and self-conscious about her body, often trying to slip in unnoticed. Now, she laughs at the memory.
These days, she doesn’t sneak in, or even walk in.
“I waltz in,” Zonia says, smiling broadly.
DoDay’s mix of ages – young children, pensioners, and everyone in between – helped Zonia realise she belonged there just as much as anyone else.
The results have been consistent and tangible. She’s lost weight. She’s stronger in both body and mind. Her blood sugar levels have improved, and her doctor has noticed the change.
But the biggest wins show up in everyday life.
Climbing hundreds of steps on a holiday in Santorini without stopping. Keeping pace with younger friends. Feeling capable, confident and accomplished after every training session.
For Zonia, strength training isn’t about pursuing a perfect size or shape. It’s about independence, longevity and quality of life.
It’s about walking through the world knowing she can handle it – and on the days she can’t, she knows Michael and his team are there to help her rise again.
Zonia says she’s not perfect, and often slides back into old ways. But Michael keeps her focused and always makes it easy to get back on track.
I wanted someone fun to train with, who is easy to talk to, and easy to relate to.
